TMC Leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray Resigns from Rajya Sabha and Leaves Party Amidst Political Turmoil

In a significant political development, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray announced his resignation from the Rajya Sabha and his departure from the party on Monday. This decision comes in the wake of the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, where Ray indicated he is accepting the voters’ mandate, which he believed favored the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and signified a desire for change.

Ray stated that the electorate delivered a ‘huge mandate’ to the BJP to conclude what he described as a ’15-year anarchical rule’ by the TMC. He attributed this to issues of rampant corruption, violence against women, and failures in essential services such as health, education, and law enforcement. According to Ray, the new BJP-led government has initiated steps towards developing and reconstructing West Bengal.

Ray, who has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 2011, pointed out that the recent elections resulted in the BJP securing 207 out of 294 seats in the Assembly, well above the required majority of 148 seats. In contrast, the TMC managed only 80 seats, an outcome that has sparked concerns regarding internal divisions within the party. This rift has been underscored by the actions of Ritabrata Banerjee, an expelled MLA, who claimed that a faction of 58 TMC legislators has formed a new legislative wing, challenging the authority of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.

In response to these internal conflicts, the TMC has taken drastic measures by dissolving all its committees and organizational units across the state, indicating a shift in strategy as it aims to regroup and re-establish its influence. The party’s current predicament is exacerbated by the perception of disunity and dissatisfaction among its members, particularly with the leadership’s choices regarding the Opposition’s representation in the Assembly.
