In a surprising turn of events, Karnataka’s newly appointed irrigation minister, Ramalinga Reddy, has tendered his resignation just two days after Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s Cabinet was sworn in. Reddy’s decision stems from his dissatisfaction with the portfolio assigned to him, as reported by various news outlets.
During a press conference, Reddy expressed his disappointment, stating that he had been led to believe he would oversee the Bengaluru Development Department. Instead, this crucial portfolio was handed to fellow party member Krishna Byre Gowda. Reddy emphasized that throughout his political career, he had never sought specific ministerial positions, but rather had been assured of the Bengaluru role by the party leadership.
The veteran Congress leader has been a prominent figure in Karnataka politics, serving in various capacities, including as transport minister under the previous Siddaramaiah administration since May 2023. With a long-standing affiliation with the Congress party—over five decades—Reddy was adamant that his resignation did not indicate a departure from the party. He stressed, “I have been in the Congress party for the past 53 years,” reaffirming his commitment and loyalty to the party.
Chief Minister Shivakumar, addressing the media, characterized Reddy as a close ally and assured that discussions would take place to resolve the matter amicably. Reddy conveyed his concerns to the Chief Minister, explaining that he felt unable to function effectively in his current role. His tenure as an MLA from Bengaluru’s BTM Layout since 2008, along with his previous representation of the Jayanagara constituency between 1989 and 2008, underscores his established presence in state politics.
The incident raises questions about intra-party dynamics within the Congress as it navigates the complexities of governance in Karnataka. As the Cabinet settles into its roles, all eyes will be on how the leadership addresses grievances and ensures stability in its operations.
