K Annamalai has officially resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a development confirmed on Friday. His resignation comes amidst widespread rumors that he may be gearing up to establish his own political party. While Annamalai has yet to publicly comment on his decision, he indicated to reporters earlier this week that he would address the issue more candidly in due course.
This move follows a significant political shake-up in Tamil Nadu, where the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the BJP, faced a disappointing defeat in recent Assembly elections. The results, declared on May 4, revealed a dramatic shift in the political landscape. The newly-formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor and politician Vijay, emerged as the largest party in the state, securing 108 seats. However, it fell short of the majority required to form a government, which is 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
The ruling coalition, termed the Secular Progressive Alliance, which comprises the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Congress, and several Left parties, managed to win 73 seats. In contrast, the NDA, primarily consisting of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) alongside the BJP, garnered a mere 53 seats—47 of which were won by the AIADMK, with the BJP claiming just one seat.
On May 10, following these election results, Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister. This marked a historic moment as it led to the formation of the first state government in Tamil Nadu not led by the DMK or the AIADMK in nearly six decades. Annamalai, who has had a diverse career, transitioned from being an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer to a political figure when he joined the BJP. His resignation adds fuel to the speculation surrounding his political ambitions and future moves.
As the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu evolve, Annamalai’s next steps will be closely monitored by political analysts and supporters alike. His departure from the BJP might not only reshape his political trajectory but could also have significant implications for the future of the NDA in Tamil Nadu.
