In a recent development along the India-Bangladesh border, Bangladesh authorities have alleged that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) attempted to forcibly relocate at least 30 individuals into Bangladeshi territory. This incident reportedly occurred between Thursday night and Friday morning, sparking tensions between the two neighboring countries.
According to reports from Prothom Alo, the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) successfully intervened to prevent the alleged incursions at four different border points. These efforts were bolstered by local residents who actively participated in forestalling the BSF’s maneuvers. The individuals in question were later observed lingering along the zero line— the demarcation that separates India and Bangladesh— with their luggage in tow, indicating their uncertain status.
The BGB specified that the BSF’s attempts included the movement of women and children across border points located in the Aditmari, Hatibandha, and Patgram upazilas in the Lalmonirhat district, situated in northern Bangladesh. Reports state that a tense standoff ensued between the two border forces, as members of the BGB confronted their Indian counterparts, resulting in a brief escalation of tensions.
In Aditmari, it was noted that BGB personnel identified 12 individuals they deemed suspicious, positioned near two border markers. Following warnings issued via handheld megaphones, these individuals reportedly retreated back into Indian territory. Despite the unfolding situation, the Indian government has not yet issued a public response to the claims made by Bangladeshi authorities.
Amid these tensions, the BGB sought to arrange a flag meeting with the BSF’s Raniganj-3 battalion to discuss the incidents. However, there has been no acknowledgment or response from the BSF regarding this request. Prothom Alo also highlighted that, on the same day, Bangladeshi forces thwarted an additional ten attempts by Indian personnel to push individuals across the border, further intensifying the ongoing concerns surrounding border security and sovereignty.
