TMC Reiterates Appointment of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition Amid Controversy

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing a tumultuous week as it navigates an ongoing signature forgery controversy, leading to heightened tensions within the party’s legislative ranks. On Tuesday, Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of TMC, submitted a new letter to West Bengal Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose, reaffirming the party’s decision to appoint Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition.

This fresh development comes amid allegations of forged signatures related to the documents that were submitted to the Speaker, which support Chattopadhyay’s position. Two TMC MLAs, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, were expelled from the party on Monday, and they claim that their signatures were misused in this matter. The allegations have sparked rumors of deeper divisions within the TMC, raising questions about the party’s unity as it approaches upcoming elections.

On the same day of the letter’s submission, TMC MLAs Kunal Ghosh and Ashima Patra attempted to personally deliver the correspondence to Speaker Bose. However, they reported that the Speaker’s office secretary refused to accept the letter in Bose’s absence, suggesting that a verbal directive had been issued to halt any communication from the TMC. Ghosh expressed frustration at this situation, noting, “Just yesterday, the Speaker was accepting our letters without issue. It’s perplexing that the office suddenly decided to reject official communications from two elected representatives.”

The letter from Banerjee not only insists on Chattopadhyay’s leadership but also endorses Ashima Patra and Nayana Bandyopadhyay as deputy Leaders of the Opposition, along with Firhad Hakim designated as the chief whip. TMC is urging the Speaker to formally recognize these appointments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability in their legislative framework amidst ongoing internal strife.
