Ahmedabad Police Detain Over 290 Alleged Undocumented Bangladeshi Migrants

The Ahmedabad Police announced on Wednesday that they have taken into custody more than 290 individuals suspected to be undocumented Bangladeshi migrants as part of a late-night operation. According to reports, the operation, carried out in various localities including Chandola, Gulabnagar, and Khodiyarnagar, was based on intelligence inputs received by the department.

During the operation, a total of 131 individuals were apprehended while an additional 160 were subjected to rigorous questioning by law enforcement officials. Joint Commissioner of Police, Sharad Singhal, confirmed that the teams engaged in thorough checks of documents and identity verification to ascertain the legality of their presence in India. This move follows a heightened focus on individuals from Bengali-speaking communities, especially in the wake of recent terror incidents in the country.

The crackdown comes in the context of increasing scrutiny of undocumented migrants, particularly following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in April 2025. Authorities in several BJP-ruled states have been intensifying their efforts to identify individuals who cannot validate their Indian citizenship, often targeting Bengali-speaking Muslims who may face challenges in providing acceptable documentation.
