In a significant development in West Bengal, five individuals have been apprehended, while two others are being held for questioning in connection with the assault on Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur. The police confirmed these arrests on Sunday, following a suo motu case that was filed after the incident, which took place during Banerjee’s visit to the region.
The attack occurred on Saturday when Banerjee was in Sonarpur to meet the family of a party worker who was allegedly killed in post-election violence. As he approached the family’s residence, a mob began hurling eggs and stones at him, while chanting slogans that accused him of being a “thief.” Disturbing videos circulating on social media depicted the TMC leader, clad in a helmet, being subjected to this unruly behavior.
In the aftermath of the assault, three specialized police teams undertook extensive overnight raids in the area, utilizing security camera footage and news clips to identify those involved. According to a police spokesperson, five of the suspects were formally arrested after they were questioned, while two additional individuals have been detained for further investigation. The arrested individuals are slated to appear before the Baruipur court later on Sunday.
The TMC has alleged that members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) orchestrated the attack, pointing to the political tensions that have escalated in the region. However, the BJP has categorically denied these claims, asserting that the public demonstration reflected widespread discontent among citizens rather than a politically motivated attack. This incident underscores the ongoing political rivalry and the charged atmosphere in West Bengal, particularly in the aftermath of the recent elections.
Banerjee reportedly suffered minor injuries from the incident and was taken to two private hospitals for medical evaluation. Doctors confirmed that he had sustained some bruising to his chest, but he was later discharged the same evening. The incident has sparked outrage among TMC supporters, highlighting the volatile nature of political demonstrations in the state and raising questions about the safety of public figures amidst escalating political hostilities.
