False Trafficking Allegations Result in Detention of Bihar Children En Route to Madrasas

In a troubling incident, a group of children traveling from Bihar to attend a madrasa in Maharashtra found themselves detained under false trafficking accusations. The situation unfolded at a railway station in Madhya Pradesh where railway police, accompanied by child welfare officers, intervened and ‘rescued’ 163 minors, suspecting they were victims of human trafficking.

Among those affected was 15-year-old Irfan Shaikh, who had just embarked on a journey with his peers from Bagdahara village. Their group, which included a madrasa teacher, was headed to Latur district when they were abruptly halted in Katni. The children were traveling in several small groups, and despite having the necessary permissions and documentation from their families, officials remained skeptical, alleging possible trafficking.

Kiswar Jahan, Irfan’s mother and a widow with limited financial resources, rushed to Madhya Pradesh to advocate for her son’s release. “I had to deplete my savings to afford the trip,” she said, expressing her desperation. Despite presenting all relevant documents to the authorities, including proof of parentage, officials informed her that her son would not be released immediately and advised her to return home.

Irfan spent 13 days in a government facility in Jabalpur, where he described being subjected to extensive questioning regarding his background and the reasons for his journey. This incident has sparked a broader conversation about the challenges faced by poor families in India, particularly those who wish to send their children to religious institutions for education.
