Bengal CM Reveals 30 Lakh Women Disqualified from Cash Transfer Program

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that around 30 lakh women beneficiaries of the Lakshmi Bhandar cash transfer scheme have been deemed ineligible. This statement, reported by The Indian Express, highlights significant changes in eligibility criteria for financial assistance aimed at women in the state.

The Lakshmi Bhandar scheme, initiated by the previous Trinamool Congress government, provided monthly cash support to women. However, the current administration has identified that many beneficiaries have either been removed from electoral rolls following a special intensive revision or have not applied for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This revelation comes just weeks after Women and Child Development Minister Agnimitra Paul stated that women whose names were struck off during the electoral roll revision would not qualify for benefits under the upcoming Annapurna Bhandar scheme, set to launch on June 1.

Under the new Annapurna Bhandar program, eligible women will receive a monthly cash benefit of Rs 3,000, an increase from the Rs 1,500 per month provided under the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme. Adhikari emphasized that the government’s focus is to ensure a meticulous and accurate list of beneficiaries before the implementation of the new scheme. He expressed the intention of conducting a thorough review of fresh application forms to guarantee a transparent and fair selection process.

To facilitate this, the Chief Minister announced that new application forms would be made available, allowing for a comprehensive verification process by the Women and Child Development department. This effort aims to ensure that eligible women receive the financial assistance they require, while also preventing discrepancies in the beneficiary list. The move to revamp the criteria for cash transfers follows broader governance and electoral reforms being pushed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal.
