The New India Foundation (NIF) has announced a significant change to its Book Fellowship program, shifting from a biennial to an annual awarding schedule. This development, starting this year, aims to provide writers with more consistent support as they delve into nonfiction works that examine various facets of post-1947 India. Previously, the fellowship was granted every two years, but now, aspiring authors will have the opportunity to apply annually, with each application window lasting approximately three months.
The NIF Book Fellowship is designed to encourage thoughtful exploration of India’s modern history through nonfiction literature. It offers participants a generous monthly stipend, along with editorial guidance, mentorship, and a robust network of fellow writers and intellectuals. This initiative is crucial in a country where understanding its own narrative is fundamental to shaping its future.
Niraja Gopal Jayal, a member of the Governing Board of the New India Foundation, emphasized the importance of serious nonfiction in aiding India’s self-perception. She stated, “We have always believed that serious nonfiction is essential to how India understands itself and we want to make that support even more consistent, accessible, and responsive to the writers who are doing this work.” This sentiment highlights the foundation’s commitment to fostering a culture of informed discourse and creative expression.
In addition, Srinath Raghavan, another Governing Board member, noted that transitioning to an annual fellowship cycle would not only nurture the literary field but also enhance the quality of the work produced. The move is seen as an opportunity to expand the scope of nonfiction writing in India, allowing more voices to contribute to the ongoing conversation about the country’s identity and history.
The NIF Book Fellowship is a vital resource for writers who wish to engage with the complexities of Indian society, politics, and culture. By making this fellowship available every year, the New India Foundation reaffirms its dedication to supporting authors who are committed to shedding light on the nuances of contemporary India, ultimately enriching the literary landscape and fostering greater understanding among its citizens.
