The Indian Union government announced the formation of a high-level committee on Tuesday tasked with investigating the demographic shifts attributed to alleged “illegal immigration and other abnormal reasons.” This initiative aims to understand the complexity of these changes, their underlying causes, and their broader implications for the nation.
Chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar, the committee will report directly to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. With a mandate to analyze demographic transformations across the country, the group will specifically focus on patterns observed within different religious and social communities. The government has set a timeline for the committee to deliver its findings within one year.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah underscored the urgency of this issue, asserting that “unnatural demographic change” poses significant challenges to national sovereignty and security. He emphasized the need to address the ramifications of such changes on law and order, the social fabric of the country, and the preservation of tribal communities. Shah’s comments echo a growing concern about how uncontrolled demographic shifts can alter the landscape of society.
The committee will consist of prominent figures, including the Census Commissioner, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Durga Shanker Mishra, former Bureau of Police Research and Development chief Balaji Srivastava, and Shamika Ravi, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council. Their diverse expertise is expected to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of demographic dynamics.
As the committee embarks on its mission, it will not only assess the implications of demographic changes but also propose various policy, administrative, and legal measures aimed at mitigating any adverse effects. This endeavor signifies the government’s proactive approach to tackling issues related to migration and demographic stability, which have far-reaching consequences for India’s socio-economic landscape.
