Manipur Security Forces Foil Arms Deal, Arrest Four Insurgents Linked to UNLF(P)

In a significant operation, security forces in Manipur have successfully intercepted a large cache of weapons and apprehended four individuals associated with the United National Liberation Front (Pambei), or UNLF(P), in the Lamdeng region of Imphal. This crackdown was initiated on Wednesday following credible intelligence reports regarding attempts to sell illegally acquired arms in the area.

The operation, which unfolded in the Imphal West district, first led to the arrest of two UNLF(P) members—Heisnam Thomas Singh and Arambam Tomtom Singh. During the search, security personnel discovered a sophisticated InSAS light machine gun, alongside three magazines and 14 live rounds in their possession. This seizure is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by insurgent groups operating in the northeastern state.

On May 20, 2026, the Manipur Police reported the detention of Arambam Tomtom, 29, a resident of Heibongpokpi Mayai Leikai, as well as Heisnam Thomas, hailing from Mayang Imphal Kokchai. As authorities moved to secure these suspects, they encountered resistance from alleged accomplices who opened fire at the security forces, prompting a brief exchange of gunfire.

Following this incident, two additional suspects, Ningthoujam Rakesh Singh and Chingakham Mahesh Singh, were also apprehended in connection with the attack on security personnel. Initial interrogations suggest that the arrested individuals were in the vicinity to facilitate the sale of the seized weaponry, indicating a deeper network of arms trafficking linked to insurgent activities in the region.

Manipur, plagued by various insurgent groups for decades, continues to see sporadic violence and arms-related incidents despite ongoing peace talks and government efforts to curb militant activities. The state’s complex socio-political landscape, characterized by ethnic strife and a demand for greater autonomy, has perpetuated the activities of such insurgent factions, which often resort to illegal arms trade to fund their operations.
