A remarkable family history unfolds like a vivid tapestry, woven with threads of love, vision, and the extraordinary. In this narrative, we delve into the life of a woman whose legacy transcends generations, marked by her unique ability that captivated those around her.
The story begins with my great-grandmother, a woman of extraordinary talent who had the uncanny ability to dislocate her left eyeball from its socket. This peculiar skill led her to briefly join a travelling circus. However, fate intervened when she fell deeply in love with my great-grandfather, a humble pharmacist residing in South Bombay. Although her circus days were fleeting, she claimed to possess a “vision” that was not part of her performance. This “vision” has become the focal point of numerous family tales, often illuminating the hidden aspects of love and betrayal.
In one enchanting story, women from the community would gather around my great-grandmother, bringing her offerings of food and drink. In return, she would reveal secrets about their husbands’ infidelities, a whimsical yet poignant reminder of the complicated dynamics of relationships. A humorous yet insightful joke persists in our family: while we women are believed to possess the “vision,” we often remain oblivious to the unfaithfulness of our own partners. This blend of irony and wisdom has been passed down, creating a rich tapestry of familial bonds.
Although my great-grandmother passed away in 1979, the same year I was born, her spirit continues to resonate through my life. On my 13th birthday, my mother gifted me an eyeball preserved in a glass jar, a bizarre yet cherished heirloom. The iris is a haunting grey, reminiscent of stormy skies, and it has remained a symbol of connection to my roots. I also inherited her enigmatic “vision,” which foretells that my true love awaits me at the Kohinoor Circus. This tantalizing prospect compels me to wonder if my destined partner, Heron, would come to witness my performance.
With aspirations of becoming an artist in the circus, I envision my act as “Daring Draupadi,” a nod to the legendary character from the Mahabharata. My real name is Sita, and while I prepare to step into the spotlight, I am reminded of the powerful legacy I carry. My great-grandmother’s unusual talent may have faded from the limelight, but her essence lives on in the stories we tell, the bonds we cherish, and the visions we hold. As I embark on my journey, I am eager to embrace the adventure that lies ahead, fueled by the love and wisdom passed down through generations.
