In a significant development within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), former minister Giasuddin Molla has lodged a police complaint against the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. Molla’s allegations include claims of threats and intimidation, casting a shadow over the party’s internal dynamics amid ongoing political tensions in West Bengal.
Additionally, the complaint also names Mithun Kumar Dey, a former sub-divisional police officer from the Diamond Harbour subdivision in South 24 Parganas. This action follows a recent first information report (FIR) filed against Banerjee for allegedly making provocative statements during election campaigning, which reportedly included threats directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Giasuddin Molla has expressed his concerns about the manner in which Abhishek Banerjee has managed the party, describing it as autocratic. He asserts that Dey had been taking unwarranted punitive measures against local TMC leaders and workers who opposed Banerjee’s leadership style. Molla stated, “I was in a state of fear, and so I did not dare to open my mouth,” revealing the extent of intimidation he felt from within his own party.
In his complaint, Molla cited a specific incident where a TMC worker endured severe physical violence at the hands of Dey, claiming that the former police officer tortured party members both physically and mentally while in custody. “I have faith in the administration led by the new chief minister, Suvendu Adhikari,” Molla said, explaining his decision to finally come forward with the complaint.
This incident highlights the ongoing factional struggles within the TMC, as well as the broader challenges faced by political parties in West Bengal as they navigate the complexities of leadership and internal dissent. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the party and law enforcement will address these serious allegations, which could have far-reaching implications for the TMC’s future.
