Andhra Pradesh Announces Financial Incentives to Boost Birth Rates

In a significant move aimed at addressing declining birth rates in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu recently unveiled a new incentive program. Under this initiative, families will receive financial support of ₹30,000 for the birth of a third child and ₹40,000 for a fourth child. This announcement was made during a public gathering in Narsannapeta, located in the Srikakulam district.

Naidu emphasized the urgency for collective societal efforts to reverse the trend of declining fertility rates, which he believes poses a serious demographic challenge. He plans to provide additional details on the program within a month. This proposed policy is part of a broader strategy to enhance the state’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR), which has seen concerning decreases in recent years.

In a previous statement made in the Legislative Assembly, Naidu highlighted the demographics of Andhra Pradesh, revealing that approximately 58% of families currently have only one child. This statistic indicates that the trend of smaller families is becoming increasingly common. He pointed out that if current fertility rates do not improve, the state might face significant consequences, with predictions suggesting that by 2047, nearly 23% of the population could be elderly.

The Chief Minister’s announcement comes in the wake of a previous policy introduced in March, which offered a ₹25,000 incentive for couples having a third child. Naidu is clearly committed to reversing the trend of declining births, noting that the state is facing an ageing population that could have serious implications for future generations.

As part of this initiative, Naidu also raised concerns about the growing number of families with fewer children than the traditional norm, stating that around three lakh families have opted for just one child, rather than the culturally preferred two. This shift in family planning choices could have long-term social and economic implications for the state.

With these financial incentives, the Andhra Pradesh government is hoping to encourage families to consider expanding their households, thereby stabilizing the birth rate and ensuring a more balanced demographic structure in the future. As the state’s policymakers refine this initiative, all eyes will be on how these incentives affect family planning decisions across Andhra Pradesh.
