Tensions in Manipur: 38 Hostages from Naga and Kuki Communities as Violence Escalates

In a troubling development in Manipur, over 38 individuals from the Naga and Kuki communities are reportedly being held hostage by various factions, as confirmed by the state’s Home Minister, Govindas Konthoujam. The minister stated that discussions are ongoing with civil society organizations and political leaders to ensure the safe release of these hostages.

The situation has deteriorated significantly following a violent incident on Wednesday that resulted in the deaths of three church leaders and injuries to five others. The clergy were ambushed while traveling from a meeting in Churachandpur to Kangpokpi, which has raised serious concerns about the increasing violence in the region. The Kuki Inpi Manipur, a prominent body representing the Kuki tribes, accused the Zeliangrong United Front-Kamson faction, an armed Naga group, of orchestrating the ambush, though authorities have stated they are investigating all possible militant involvement.

In a separate incident reported in Noney district, another civilian was killed, and his spouse sustained injuries, further exacerbating the atmosphere of fear and unrest. In response to these escalating tensions, both Kuki and Naga communities have called for shutdowns in several districts, including Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Chandel, as a form of protest against the violence and the loss of lives.

The current unrest stems from ongoing tensions that reignited on February 7, following an alleged altercation between members of the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki-Zo communities. This latest wave of violence has highlighted the fragile peace that exists in the region, where historical grievances and territorial disputes often lead to outbreaks of conflict.
