In a significant political move, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Wednesday that he will retain his Assembly seat in Bhabanipur, electing to vacate the Nandigram constituency following the recent elections. His decision comes on the heels of a landmark victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which wrested power from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after 15 years of leadership under Mamata Banerjee.
Adhikari, who is a prominent figure in the BJP, made the announcement to the press outside the Assembly after taking his oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Bhabanipur. He stated, “Someone else will be elected as MLA from Nandigram in a bye-election, but I will not let the people there feel my absence,” signaling his commitment to serve the constituents of Nandigram despite stepping away from the seat.
The electoral battle in Nandigram was particularly notable as it featured Adhikari defeating Banerjee herself by a margin of over 15,000 votes, while he also secured a win against TMC’s Pabitra Kar by 9,665 votes. This victory not only marked a pivotal moment in West Bengal’s political landscape but also established Adhikari as a key player within the BJP. His elevation to the chief minister’s office, which he assumed on Saturday, made him the first BJP leader to hold this position in the state.
Before joining the BJP in 2020, Adhikari was a minister in the TMC government, highlighting a significant shift in his political allegiance that occurred amidst rising tensions between the two parties. His decision to focus on Bhabanipur over Nandigram may reflect strategic considerations, as Bhabanipur represents a stronghold for the BJP where he can consolidate support and strengthen his leadership.
As West Bengal navigates through this new political chapter, Adhikari’s decisions will be closely watched. His intent to ensure continued representation for Nandigram indicates a potential future bye-election where another candidate will have the opportunity to fill the position. The BJP’s recent victories have certainly reshaped the state’s political dynamics, and how Adhikari manages his dual responsibilities will be critical for his administration going forward.
