CBI Takes Charge of Investigation into Murder of Suvendu Adhikari’s Aide in West Bengal

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially assumed control of the inquiry into the murder of Chandranath Rath, an aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. This pivotal development comes after the state government requested the involvement of the central agency. Rath was fatally shot on May 6 in the vicinity of Kolkata, a tragic incident that has raised significant concerns regarding political violence in the region.

Officials have revealed that the CBI has formed a dedicated seven-member Special Investigation Team, led by a deputy inspector general of police specializing in special crimes from Delhi. Chandranath Rath was tragically shot while he was traveling home in Barasat. As he was navigating through the Madhyamgram area around 10:20 pm, assailants on motorbikes intercepted his vehicle. Reports indicate that one of the suspects approached the car and fired three shots at close range into the vehicle, striking Rath multiple times while he was seated next to the driver. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to the hospital, while his driver, Buddhadeb, sustained serious injuries.
