The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially assumed control of the inquiry into the murder of Chandranath Rath, an aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. This pivotal development comes after the state government requested the involvement of the central agency. Rath was fatally shot on May 6 in the vicinity of Kolkata, a tragic incident that has raised significant concerns regarding political violence in the region.
Officials have revealed that the CBI has formed a dedicated seven-member Special Investigation Team, led by a deputy inspector general of police specializing in special crimes from Delhi. The agency has re-registered the first information report (FIR) originally filed by local police, which suggests a thorough reassessment of the evidence and circumstances surrounding Rath’s murder. The investigation will scrutinize various angles, including potential interstate criminal connections and the possibility of a conspiracy behind the attack.
Chandranath Rath was tragically shot while he was traveling home in Barasat. As he was navigating through the Madhyamgram area around 10:20 pm, assailants on motorbikes intercepted his vehicle. Reports indicate that one of the suspects approached the car and fired three shots at close range into the vehicle, striking Rath multiple times while he was seated next to the driver. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to the hospital, while his driver, Buddhadeb, sustained serious injuries.
This incident is part of a broader narrative of escalating political unrest in West Bengal, particularly following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory over the Trinamool Congress in the recent Assembly elections. The political landscape in the state remains charged as various parties grapple with the ramifications of this violent episode, which has sparked fears of further unrest and retaliation.
The involvement of the CBI reflects the seriousness of the situation, as the agency is known for tackling crimes that have significant political implications. The coming days will likely see heightened scrutiny as the investigation unfolds, and stakeholders across the political spectrum will be closely watching how this case develops.
