Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, who also leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has officially stepped down from his position as the elected representative of the Tiruchi East Assembly constituency. His resignation was announced on Sunday, a move that sets the stage for a forthcoming bye-election in the region. Meanwhile, Vijay will continue to represent the Perambur seat located in northern Chennai, which he successfully retained in the recent assembly elections.
The decision to resign from Tiruchi East follows the results of the state assembly elections declared on May 4, where Vijay made headlines not only for winning two seats but also for leading the TVK to a historic performance. In a ceremony earlier that same day, Vijay took his oath as Chief Minister in the presence of prominent political figures including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
This marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, as the TVK has managed to break the nearly 60-year cycle of alternating power between the two major Dravidian parties—the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The TVK emerged as the single-largest party in its electoral debut by securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, although it fell short of the majority threshold of 118 seats, necessitating alliances with smaller parties to form a government.
In a related development, the state governor, Rajendra Arlekar, has instructed Chief Minister Vijay to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly by May 13. This requirement adds a layer of urgency to the political scenario as the TVK prepares to solidify its governance amid a backdrop of changing political dynamics in the state.
As Vijay vacates the Tiruchi East seat, the effective strength of the TVK in the Assembly will now stand at 107 seats. The upcoming bye-poll for Tiruchi East will be closely watched, as it could further influence the composition and stability of the newly formed government.
