In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, D. Raja, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI), has called upon Governor Rajendra Arlekar to permit the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, to form the government as the largest party in the Assembly. Raja emphasized the need for the governor to allow the TVK to demonstrate its majority in the legislative assembly, especially following its impressive performance in the recent elections.
The governor’s refusal to entertain Vijay’s request to form the government has raised eyebrows, particularly since this marks the second consecutive day that he has declined the proposal. Reports suggest that Arlekar has instructed the TVK leader to return only after obtaining the backing of at least 118 MLAs, the majority threshold in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. This development comes at a critical juncture, as the current assembly’s tenure is set to conclude on Saturday.
In its electoral debut, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections, securing 108 seats. Despite this achievement, the party fell short of reaching the majority mark required to form the government. The Congress party, which won a modest five seats, has publicly declared its support for Vijay, yet even with this alliance, the TVK still lacks the necessary five seats to achieve a majority. The political landscape remains tense as parties navigate alliances and support for potential governance.
Vidhuthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan has also entered the fray, announcing that Vijay reached out to him for support in forming the new government. However, Thirumavalavan has yet to confirm whether his party will align itself with the TVK, further complicating the political dynamics in the state.
As the situation evolves, all eyes are on the governor and the political maneuvers that will follow in the wake of this unprecedented electoral outcome. The coming days will be crucial as parties negotiate alliances and attempt to consolidate power in Tamil Nadu’s vibrant political arena.
