In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, Thol Thirumavalavan, the leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), announced on Thursday that Vijay, the chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has reached out to him seeking support to establish a government in the state. According to reports, Vijay has not only made a personal call to Thirumavalavan but also sent a formal letter outlining his request.
Thirumavalavan indicated that discussions within the VCK are necessary before any decisions can be made, stating, “We need to engage with the frontline leaders of our party to deliberate on this matter.” He also emphasized the importance of ongoing talks with leaders from the Communist parties, highlighting a collaborative approach in deciding the next steps.
This call for support follows a remarkable showing by the TVK in its electoral debut, where it emerged as the single-largest party in the recent Tamil Nadu elections, securing 108 seats. However, the party’s victory fell short of the crucial majority needed in the 234-member Assembly, which stands at 118 seats. The Congress party, which managed to win only five seats, has also expressed its backing for Vijay as he seeks to form the state government.
Even if the TVK were to accept the Congress’s support, they would still find themselves five seats short of the majority required to govern. Meanwhile, the VCK, alongside the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), collectively secured two seats each in the elections. Together, these parties are currently aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which has historically been a major political force in the state.
On the same day, CPI leader M. Veerapandian confirmed that TVK general secretary ‘Bussy’ Anand had met him seeking collaborative efforts for government formation. This political landscape in Tamil Nadu is rapidly evolving, with various parties reassessing alliances and strategies in the wake of the election results, indicating that much is still at stake as the parties navigate their next moves towards forming a stable government.
