The West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, refuted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s allegations that she was physically assaulted at a vote counting center during the Assembly election proceedings on Monday.
In a press statement, Agarwal clarified that security footage from the center contradicted Banerjee’s claims, asserting that the cameras were operational throughout the counting process. He emphasized that there were no reports of violence at the center, stating, “Nobody was beaten up” and adding that such incidents are not typical during elections.
Agarwal further mentioned that no formal complaints or first information reports had been filed concerning the alleged assault. He indicated that Banerjee’s assertions lacked specificity, particularly her claims regarding the manipulation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). “What were these machines? What tables were these on? What Assembly seat was it?” he questioned, highlighting the absence of concrete details to substantiate her allegations.
The Chief Electoral Officer reaffirmed that the vote counting process is managed by the returning officer under the supervision of the district election officer, rather than the Chief Electoral Officer. This clarification was crucial in ensuring transparency and trust in the electoral process, especially in a politically charged atmosphere.
Mamata Banerjee’s claims come against the backdrop of an intense electoral environment in West Bengal, which has seen its fair share of political drama and allegations of malpractice in past elections. The Chief Minister’s remarks sparked significant media attention, further intensifying scrutiny of the voting process and the integrity of the electoral system in the state.
