In her remarkable work, ‘Faith and Fury: Covid Dispatches from India’s Hinterlands’, journalist Jyoti Yadav shines a light on the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on rural communities in India. Through poignant storytelling, Yadav captures the essence of human struggle and resilience against the backdrop of tragedy and chaos.
One harrowing account featured in Yadav’s narrative is that of a man who toiled for two decades at a brick kiln in Lucknow. In the summer of 2020, as the pandemic ravaged lives, he found himself gravely ill with bronchitis. Unable to afford medical treatment, he lay on a cart wrapped in a blanket, where three men painstakingly transported him back to his home in Sitapur, approximately 80 kilometers away.
At the same time, 15-year-old Jyoti Kumari embarked on a daunting journey from Haryana to Darbhanga in Bihar, cycling a staggering 1,200 kilometers with her sick father seated behind her. Tragically, just a year later, she lost him to a heart attack during the devastating second wave of Covid-19 in May 2021. These personal stories encapsulate the profound impact of the pandemic on families, highlighting the dire circumstances many faced.
In Uttar Pradesh, the situation was equally dire. As the second wave surged, an exhausted doctor at a hospital in Barabanki recounted the relentless nightmares that haunted him—imagining dwindling oxygen levels and the frantic pleas of families mourning their loved ones. The emotional toll on healthcare workers was immense, compounding an already tragic scenario.
In Varanasi, the ancient ghats became a haunting reminder of the loss that swept over the nation. Amidst the unrelenting heat, the Dom community, traditionally tasked with conducting cremations, faced an unprecedented burden. Many priests had fled, leaving the Doms to step into their roles, performing last rites for the deceased while grappling with their own grief and fears.
Yadav’s work is not just a collection of stories; it is a vivid portrayal of the human spirit’s endurance in the face of adversity. Each account serves to remind us of the collective grief experienced across rural India during a time of unprecedented crisis. ‘Faith and Fury’ stands as a crucial testament to field journalism, shedding light on narratives that reflect the untold struggles of the marginalized during the pandemic.
