US Imposes Sanctions on Two Indians Linked to Drug Cartel Operations

In a significant move against international drug trafficking, the United States has imposed sanctions on two Indian nationals, Satishkumar Hareshbhai Sutaria and Yuktakumari Ashishkumar Modi, along with their companies, as part of a broader crackdown on a Mexico-based drug cartel. This action, announced by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), targets a total of 23 individuals and entities believed to be involved in a global supply chain facilitating the production of illegal drugs.

The sanctions, officially enacted on April 23, 2023, entail the freezing of all US assets related to the sanctioned individuals and organizations. According to US officials, Sutaria and Modi, operating through their firms SR Chemicals and Agrat Chemicals, are accused of mislabeling precursor chemicals as safe substances. These chemicals are alleged to have been shipped to Mexico and Guatemala, where they were reportedly utilized in the illicit manufacture of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid linked to numerous overdose deaths across the globe.

In March 2025, both Sutaria and Modi were apprehended by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad amid ongoing investigations into their operations. Subsequent to their arrest, they were granted bail by the Gujarat High Court in February. Reports indicate that they have been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, with a formal chargesheet filed against them on May 15. As they await trial, the implications of their alleged activities have drawn considerable attention from national and international law enforcement agencies.

The US Embassy in India acknowledged the role of Indian law enforcement in tackling the elements of this criminal network, highlighting the collaborative efforts to combat drug trafficking that transcends borders.
