Violence Erupts in Imphal as Protesters Demand Justice for Slain Children

In a significant escalation of unrest in Manipur, hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police forces in Imphal on Saturday, as they were prevented from marching towards the Chief Minister’s residence. The protesters were advocating for justice following the tragic deaths of two children in a recent assault and were calling for lasting peace in the region.

Reports indicate that more than 20 individuals sustained injuries during the confrontations, which erupted as the protesters attempted to breach police barricades. The protests were organized by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, a local civil society group, which mobilized individuals from eight different locations across the city. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of chaos in areas like Keishampat, Lamlong, Ima Keithel, and Singjamei, where protesters reportedly hurled stones at the police. In response, law enforcement utilized tear gas to disperse the crowds, further escalating the conflict. Amid the turmoil, police arrested six individuals, though it remains unclear whether these arrests were directly connected to Saturday’s events.

Eventually, a delegation of the protesters was permitted to meet with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, where they presented a memorandum detailing their demands. Following this meeting, Singh appealed for calm, urging the families of the deceased children, who lost their lives on April 7 in Tronglaobi, to find it in their hearts to accept his condolences.

The unrest in Manipur underscores a growing frustration within the local community, as many residents continue to grapple with violence and instability.
