Assembly Elections: Voter Turnout Reaches 41.1% in West Bengal and 37.5% in Tamil Nadu by Midday

Polling for the Assembly elections is actively taking place in Tamil Nadu and select regions of West Bengal on Thursday. Tamil Nadu is conducting elections across all 234 legislative assembly seats, while in West Bengal, voting is ongoing in 152 out of 294 constituencies. As reported by the Election Commission, by 11 AM, Tamil Nadu recorded a voter turnout of 37.5%, whereas West Bengal saw a slightly higher participation rate at 41.1%.

The polling process commenced at 7 AM and is set to conclude at 6 PM. It is important to note that elections for the remaining seats in West Bengal are scheduled for April 29. Vote counting for both states will take place on May 4, coinciding with the results from Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, where voting occurred on April 9.

Amid the polling activities on Thursday, tensions escalated in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, where a confrontation occurred between members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Humayun Kabir, the founder of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party. Reports indicate that TMC workers targeted Kabir with slogans urging him to leave, alleging his affiliations with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This incident unfolded in an area that had seen violent disturbances the previous day, including an incident involving a crude bomb that injured a woman and stirred alarm among residents ahead of the elections.
