Renewed Tensions Emerge in Manipur as Buffer Zones Descend into Violence

In a disturbing turn of events, the buffer zones in Manipur, initially thought to be stabilizing, have once again succumbed to violence. Just a few months ago, Meitei volunteers, armed civilians tasked with protecting their communities, had laid down their arms, believing peace was on the horizon. The conflict, which erupted in May 2023, had created a deep rift between the Meitei community in the plains and the tribal Kuki-Zo-Hmars from the hill districts, leading to widespread displacement and casualties.

The situation escalated rapidly, with over 260 fatalities and more than 60,000 individuals forced to flee their homes. The violence stemmed from ethnic tensions that fractured Manipur’s social fabric, leaving communities divided and fearful. A 43-year-old Meitei volunteer recounted his role in safeguarding villages around Moirang, where he and others banded together in defense against perceived threats from neighboring ethnic groups.

Many believed that the presence of central security forces would provide the safety needed to end hostilities. “We thought that peace was coming,” remarked Ibotombi, a 60-year-old educator from Tronglaobi village, acknowledging the relief felt when volunteers disbanded their operations. The notion of returning to normalcy prompted many to cease their defensive preparations.

However, the optimism proved to be fleeting. In the early morning hours of April 7, the fragile peace was shattered, and violence erupted once more, plunging the region into chaos and reigniting fears among the populace. The renewed clashes highlight the volatile nature of the ethnic strife in Manipur, raising concerns about the effectiveness of governmental interventions and the ability to restore order.
