Madras High Court Demands Clarification from Vijay on Alleged ₹100 Crore Election Affidavit Discrepancy

The Madras High Court has called upon Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay, alongside the Income Tax Department and the Election Commission, to respond to a petition alleging a significant discrepancy exceeding ₹100 crore in his election affidavits. This request was made during a hearing on Monday, which has drawn attention to inconsistencies in the financial disclosures made by the actor-turned-politician.

The court issued notices not only to Vijay but also to returning officers in the Perumbur constituency of Chennai and Tiruchirapalli East. The bench, comprising Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan, was examining a petition filed by a Chennai resident. The petitioner contended that the affidavit submitted by Vijay for the Tiruchirapalli East constituency contradicted the one presented for Perambur. In Perambur, Vijay had declared assets surpassing ₹105 crore, but he reported assets amounting to over ₹224 crore for Tiruchirapalli East.

The judges remarked on the apparent irregularity, highlighting the significant discrepancy of more than ₹100 crore that was not disclosed in one of the constituencies. However, they refrained from making any definitive judgments regarding the merits of the allegations at this stage.

The matter has been scheduled for further hearings next week, as the political landscape gets increasingly charged ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Voting is set to take place in a single phase on April 23, with results expected to be announced on May 4. This scrutiny of Vijay’s affidavits not only raises questions about transparency in political finances but also reflects the heightened scrutiny that public figures face in the electoral arena.
