Election Commission Takes Action Against Over 11,000 Social Media Posts for Violating Election Conduct

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has reported significant action against social media activities considered detrimental to the integrity of the upcoming Assembly elections. As of now, the Commission has intervened in more than 11,000 social media posts since the announcement of the electoral schedule on March 15 for five states: Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

The ECI’s actions are part of a broader strategy to uphold the Model Code of Conduct, which is designed to ensure fair play during elections. This includes the removal of misleading content, the issuance of clarifications, and the filing of first information reports (FIRs) against those responsible for spreading false narratives. The Commission emphasizes the importance of maintaining law and order and ensuring that the electoral process remains untainted by misinformation.

Monitoring activities are being carried out by designated state nodal officers under the provisions of the Information Technology Act. The Commission’s vigilance primarily targets posts that either breach the Model Code of Conduct or have the potential to incite unrest amongst voters. These measures are aimed not only at political parties but also at candidates and the general public, reinforcing that everyone must adhere to the guidelines set forth.

The Model Code of Conduct plays a critical role in shaping the political landscape during elections, establishing clear guidelines for speeches, campaigning, and other electoral activities. It serves as a framework to ensure that all parties contesting the election do so in a respectful and fair manner, without resorting to malpractices that could mislead voters.

Polling dates for the states commenced with Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry voting on April 9, while Tamil Nadu and West Bengal will cast their votes on April 23 and April 29, respectively. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, signifying a crucial date in determining the new legislative assemblies. The Commission has urged social media platforms to act swiftly, ideally within three hours, to address any flagged posts that could violate election norms.
