Opposition INDIA Bloc Backs Women’s Reservation, Opposes Delimitation Bill

The Opposition alliance known as the INDIA bloc has expressed its support for women’s reservation but firmly stated its intention to oppose the Union government’s proposed delimitation bill. This announcement came after a meeting of various parties within the alliance in New Delhi, where Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed reporters regarding the unified stance of the opposition.

Kharge emphasized that while the bloc is in favor of ensuring women’s representation in the Parliament and state assemblies, it has significant concerns regarding the delimitation process, which involves redefining the boundaries of electoral constituencies. “We are not against the concept of women’s reservation, but we strongly oppose the delimitation bill as it is currently framed,” Kharge stated. He highlighted the lack of clarity surrounding the census, which is a crucial aspect for any delimitation exercise.

The opposition leaders accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of introducing the delimitation bill with politically motivated intentions. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh argued that the BJP is preparing to face electoral defeats in states like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, and suggested that the delimitation process could be manipulated to favor the party’s prospects in these regions. Ramesh referred to the Delimitation Commission as a “weapon” for the BJP to secure a parliamentary majority, raising alarms about the potential implications of the bill.

The INDIA bloc has been vocal about its demand for the immediate implementation of women’s reservation in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, advocating for this to take effect in the upcoming 2024 elections. Ramesh reiterated that the opposition coalition desires for the reservation to be based on the current count of 543 parliamentary seats, expressing concern that the ongoing delimitation could jeopardize this objective. He further labeled the proposed delimitation as “very dangerous,” signaling the parties’ collective apprehension about its impact on fair representation.

The matter of women’s reservation remains a pivotal issue in Indian politics, gaining traction as various states and political entities push for enhanced representation of women in governance. As the 2024 elections approach, the stance of the opposition bloc could play a critical role in shaping the political landscape, with the delimitation bill becoming a focal point of contention.
