The Telangana High Court has granted transit anticipatory bail for one week to Congress leader Pawan Khera in connection with a forgery and criminal conspiracy case filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This ruling offers Khera temporary protection from arrest, allowing him to seek further legal recourse in the appropriate jurisdiction where the case was initiated.
Justice K Sujana, while delivering the verdict, noted that Khera has one week to file his application in the court in Assam. The case stems from allegations made by Khera, who asserted that he possesses documentary evidence indicating that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds multiple passports from countries including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. The Chief Minister and his wife have categorically denied these claims, labeling them as false and defamatory.
During court proceedings, Justice Sujana raised questions regarding Khera’s decision to approach the Telangana High Court rather than the appropriate court in Assam, where the FIR has been lodged. The FIR was officially recorded at the Crime Branch Police Station in Guwahati, and it was brought to light after Khera made his allegations public during a political discourse on Sunday. Assam’s Advocate General, Devajit Saikia, also pointed out the unusual nature of Khera’s legal strategy, questioning why he would seek an audience in a distant state rather than addressing the matter in Assam.
This legal development is significant as it unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing political tensions in the region. The Congress party, which has been in opposition in Assam, often finds itself at odds with the ruling BJP, and such accusations can escalate into larger political confrontations. The case not only involves serious allegations against a prominent political figure but also touches upon issues of electoral integrity and the interplay of power among state leaders.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on Khera’s next move and how the Assam courts will respond to this politically charged case. The outcome could have implications not only for Khera but also for the Congress party’s standing in Assam, amidst a backdrop of allegations that resonate with broader narratives of corruption and transparency in governance.
