In a significant escalation of tensions, clashes erupted between police and protesters in Ambala, Haryana, on Thursday, resulting in injuries to six police officers and multiple demonstrators. The unrest is linked to a protest by Sikh activists demanding accountability from Gursimran Singh Mand, the national president of the International Anti-Khalistani Terrorist Front.
The incident traces back to August 7, when Mand allegedly attempted to drive his car through a crowd of devotees en route to Gurdwara Panjokhra Sahib, leading to an altercation that saw him attacked by an angry mob. Protesters contended that Mand’s actions endangered lives, prompting their call for justice and action against him.
On Thursday, the protesters took to the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway, effectively blockading the crucial route, which prompted police intervention to restore order. In their efforts to clear the road, law enforcement faced resistance, leading to a violent confrontation characterized by stone pelting from the protesters. In a bid to control the situation, police utilized lathi-charges and tear gas. Haryana’s Director General of Police, Ajay Singhal, confirmed the police’s response to the escalating violence but noted that they had acknowledged the protesters’ demands.
Deputy Superintendent of Police-rank officers were among those injured in the clashes, emphasizing the intensity of the confrontation. Superintendent of Police Ajit Singh Shekhawat indicated that a formal complaint would be lodged against individuals identified as attackers on the police force.
The unrest underscores the complex socio-political dynamics at play in Haryana, especially concerning the sensitive issues surrounding the Sikh community and the narratives of anti-Khalistani sentiments. While the police managed to momentarily disperse the crowd, the incident highlights the need for dialogue and resolution in the face of growing tensions.
