India Distances Itself from Remarks Made by Sheikh Hasina During Delhi Press Conference

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has clarified that the Indian government does not support the comments made by former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a press conference in Delhi. This statement comes in the wake of a diplomatic controversy sparked by Hasina’s remarks regarding her political situation in Bangladesh.

In a virtual press conference held at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club on Wednesday, Hasina spoke about her determination to return to Bangladesh in December, despite the looming threats of imprisonment or even a death sentence. This marks her first public appearance since she sought refuge in Delhi in August 2024 amid significant protests against her administration.

During the presser, Hasina called for the release of political prisoners and the lifting of the ban on her party, the Awami League. She encouraged the international community to support the Bangladeshi populace in their quest for democracy and justice. Notably, she referred to India as a “great friend” of Bangladesh, emphasizing the historical ties and support that India has extended to her nation during challenging times.

However, the MEA reiterated that India played no part in organizing the event and stressed that it was facilitated by a private media entity.
