AIMIM Corporator Matin Patel Arrested in Nashik Over Court Summons Related to Sexual Harassment Case

In a significant development, the Maharashtra Police have apprehended Matin Patel, a corporator from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), for failing to comply with court summonses in connection with a sexual harassment case involving Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Nashik. The arrest was made after a non-bailable warrant was issued against Patel for ignoring two summons from the court.

Patel’s involvement in the case stems from allegations that he provided shelter to Nida Khan, the main accused in the sexual harassment case, even after being informed that her anticipatory bail plea had been rejected. According to reports, during an investigation into Khan’s whereabouts between April and May, police received intelligence suggesting that Patel was aiding her in avoiding arrest.

Khan, who was on the run, was ultimately arrested on May 7 in a bungalow located in the Naregaon area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, which is registered under Patel’s name. Her arrest marked a significant turn in a case that has raised concerns about the treatment of women and minorities in India, especially considering that the complainant is a 23-year-old woman from the Scheduled Caste community.

The complainant reported that Khan had exerted undue influence over her, allegedly instructing her on how to recite the kalma – the Islamic declaration of faith – and dictating changes in her personal conduct, including fasting and her choice of clothing. These actions have led to charges against Khan under laws protecting Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from discrimination and abuse.

This case has attracted considerable media attention, highlighting issues related to personal freedoms, religious practices, and the responsibilities of public officials.
