Tigmanshu Dhulia’s ‘Ghamasaan’: A Dive into the Dacoit Era with a Modern Twist

Renowned filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia returns to familiar territory with his latest venture, ‘Ghamasaan,’ which explores the intricate world of dacoits. Having previously worked as a casting director on the iconic 1994 film ‘Bandit Queen,’ which chronicled the life of Phoolan Devi, Dhulia’s foray into this genre has been both celebrated and scrutinized. His earlier work, ‘Paan Singh Tomar,’ released in 2012, showcased his adeptness at weaving narratives around folk heroes, but ‘Ghamasaan’ promises a distinct narrative approach by examining both the pursuer and the pursued.

The Hindi film, featuring the talented Pratik Gandhi in the role of a special task force leader, pits him against the notorious brigand Maharaj, portrayed by Arshad Warsi. The film also boasts a notable supporting cast, including Rajpal Yadav and Ishita Dutta, adding depth to the character-driven storyline. Dhulia has crafted the screenplay in collaboration with Piiyush Singh and Ram Yash Singh, taking inspiration from real-life dacoits while structuring the film akin to a Western, a genre Dhulia has a keen affection for.

‘Ghamasaan’ reached completion in 2023 and made its debut at the prestigious Mumbai Film Festival in 2024. Despite the film’s promising prospects, Dhulia’s career has not been without its hurdles. The 59-year-old director has faced numerous challenges, including production delays, financial issues, and complications with producers. Yet, his passion for storytelling has remained undeterred. A graduate of the National School of Drama, Dhulia’s journey into filmmaking began after assisting various directors and venturing into television. His debut film ‘Haasil’ in 2003 set the stage for his successful career, marking him as a significant voice in Indian cinema.
