Rahul Gandhi Questions Amit Shah on Police Brutality Against Students During Protests

In a pointed letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has sought clarity on the use of lethal force against students during the recent protests in Delhi. The letter, which was made public on Sunday, raises serious questions regarding the deployment of plainclothes individuals who were seen attacking student protesters with batons, an incident widely circulated across social media platforms.

The protests in Delhi erupted on June 6 when members of the Cockroach Janta Party began their demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, calling for the resignation of then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The agitation stemmed from alleged irregularities in the competitive examination processes, and it gained significant momentum following the controversial arrest of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for three weeks. His detention and subsequent hospitalization ignited further outrage, resulting in thousands of demonstrators marching towards Parliament on July 20.

However, their peaceful demonstration was met with aggressive police action, including the use of batons, tear gas, and pellet guns, leading to numerous injuries among the protesters. This brutal crackdown not only intensified the protests in the capital but also catalyzed similar movements across the nation, ultimately compelling Pradhan to resign from his position.

In his letter, Gandhi described the violent response from law enforcement as a “barbaric assault” on the students and demanded accountability for those responsible for the brutal tactics employed during the protests. He questioned whether it was indeed Shah who authorized such measures against peaceful demonstrators and sought to clarify the identity of the individuals in plain clothes who were involved in the clashes, asking whether they were police officers or affiliated volunteers.

The recent unrest has spotlighted broader issues regarding the treatment of youth and activists in India, as well as the government’s approach towards dissent.
