France Suffers Unprecedented Death Toll Amid June Heatwave

In a stark revelation, health authorities in France reported an alarming surge of 5,764 excess deaths during the intense heatwave that gripped the nation in June. The data released by France’s national public health agency covers the period from June 17 to July 2 and encompasses fatalities attributed to all causes. The statistics indicate a troubling trend, particularly among older adults, with individuals aged 75 and above accounting for approximately two-thirds of the excess deaths. Notably, this June marked the hottest on record for France since 1947, with many regions experiencing temperatures soaring beyond 40 degrees Celsius. The Paris region alone witnessed a staggering 80% increase in deaths, with figures doubling during the week of June 22 to June 28.
