Delhi High Court Refuses to Hear Petition on Police Conduct During CJP Protest

The Delhi High Court dismissed a request for an urgent hearing concerning allegations of police brutality during a protest organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) near Parliament on Monday. The court’s bench, led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, urged the petitioners not to involve the judiciary in what they deemed a political matter.

The petition arose from the events of the protest, which coincided with the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Demonstrators claimed that security forces employed excessive measures, including tear gas and baton charges, to disperse the crowd. Witnesses reported that some protestors managed to breach police barriers and reached central areas near Parliament despite law enforcement’s efforts to contain them.

Activists from the CJP further asserted that officers had used pellet guns against the protestors. These weapons, classified by the Union government as ‘non-lethal’, typically fire rubber or plastic pellets capable of inflicting serious injuries, especially to sensitive areas such as the eyes when fired at close range. However, Delhi Police officials refuted these claims, stating that they did not deploy pellet guns during the protest.

In response to the allegations, the police maintained that protestors exhibited ‘large-scale violence’ and engaged in vandalism, damaging public property during the demonstration. The CJP also reported a troubling incident involving a young boy, alleged to be just ten years old, who was reportedly assaulted by police during the protest.

The court has scheduled a formal hearing on this matter for Wednesday, allowing for a more comprehensive examination of the events that transpired. The CJP continues to demand accountability and a resignation from government officials, emphasizing the need for respectful dialogue and peaceful protest in the face of political grievances.
