In a heartbreaking incident on Monday, eight workers lost their lives when a landslide caused an under-construction tunnel to collapse in Sikkim’s Namchi district. The tunnel was part of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project, located in the Samardung area.
According to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, the disaster occurred when a landslide blocked the entrance of the tunnel, trapping approximately 27 workers inside. Emergency responders have been working tirelessly to rescue the individuals still trapped within the site, which has faced additional complications due to a suspected gas leak. Reports indicate that several rescue personnel experienced dizziness and fainting spells, likely due to hazardous gases emanating from disturbed underground rock formations created by the landslide.
Rescue operations are still underway, as officials continue to assess the situation and seek to safely extract the trapped workers. The Namchi Information and Public Relations Department has confirmed that efforts are ongoing, with teams on-site to manage the crisis and provide assistance. The bodies of the deceased workers have been transported to local hospitals, including Singtam District Hospital and Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial Hospital, for formal identification and care.
This incident highlights the dangers faced by laborers in the construction sector, particularly in regions prone to natural calamities like landslides. The ongoing development projects in hilly terrains, while essential for infrastructure and energy needs, often expose workers to significant risks. Authorities are urged to prioritize safety measures and implement stricter regulations to protect those working in hazardous conditions.
As the community comes to terms with this tragic event, condolences have poured in from various quarters, emphasizing the need for support for the victims’ families in this difficult time. The administration is expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the landslide and the safety protocols in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.
