In a shocking turn of events, Anurag Dhankar, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Tripura, was found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday. The 60-year-old Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital where medical personnel confirmed his passing at 12:48 PM.
Initial reports have indicated that Dhankar’s death may have been a suicide, although authorities have yet to officially verify this hypothesis. Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, the head of the hospital’s general medicine department, remarked, “At this point, we cannot ascertain the exact cause of death. The body is being sent for a post-mortem examination to clarify the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.” The police have since registered a case of unnatural death and have initiated a thorough investigation.
When Dhankar was brought to the hospital shortly after noon, medical staff found that he had no vital signs. Despite their efforts to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), he could not be revived. This unexpected loss has sent ripples of shock throughout the state, prompting a visit to the hospital from high-ranking officials including Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Chief Secretary JK Sinha.
Dhankar took charge as the DGP of Tripura in May 2025, and during his career, he occupied numerous key positions within the Tripura Police. His extensive experience also included stints with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Border Security Force (BSF), and he was notably involved with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.
This incident underscores the growing concerns around mental health and emotional well-being among law enforcement officials, a topic that remains critical yet often overlooked. As the investigation unfolds, the focus will not only be on determining the cause of Anurag Dhankar’s death but also on addressing the broader implications for police personnel and public servants facing immense pressure in their roles.
