Gitanjali J Angmo, the wife of renowned activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk, has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking to have her husband transferred from the government-operated Safdarjung Hospital. Angmo expressed her growing distrust in the hospital’s ability to provide adequate care for Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike since June 28 as part of a protest campaign.
The protest, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, aims to hold Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accountable for alleged mismanagement of competitive exams in India. Despite his deteriorating health, which Angmo claims is being mishandled, Wangchuk has remained resolute in his demands.
During a recent incident, Wangchuk was forcibly removed from a protest site at Jantar Mantar by police and subsequently admitted to the hospital. Angmo has raised serious concerns regarding discrepancies in Wangchuk’s health reports, particularly regarding his potassium levels. According to her, the hospital reported a dangerously low potassium level of 2.9, labeling it as life-threatening. However, she noted that this alarming figure was conspicuously absent from the hospital’s public health updates, which merely stated that his potassium levels were decreasing.
In a bid to verify the hospital’s claims, Angmo arranged for an independent laboratory test, which revealed that Wangchuk’s potassium level was actually 3.5, well within the normal range. This discrepancy has fueled her concerns over the management of her husband’s health and has prompted her legal action.
Angmo took to social media to voice her frustrations, emphasizing the lack of transparency in Wangchuk’s medical treatment. She stated, “I have lost faith in Safdarjung Government Hospital,” reflecting the distress many families face when navigating healthcare systems during crises. As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely, as Wangchuk’s plight not only highlights issues surrounding individual health but also the broader implications of political activism in India.
