US Military Targets Iran’s Chabahar Port Amid Escalating Tensions

In a significant escalation of military actions in the region, the United States military launched an airstrike on a control tower at Iran’s strategically important Chabahar port on Friday. The strike, confirmed by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth through an image showing the tower’s collapse, marks the continuation of a series of attacks on Iranian military installations that have persisted for six consecutive nights.

The Chabahar port, particularly its Shahid Beheshti terminal, has been under Indian operational oversight since 2018. This facility was initially exempt from U.S. sanctions, a status granted by the U.S. Treasury under the previous administration. However, this exemption was revoked in September by then-President Donald Trump’s administration, effectively halting Indian development projects at the port when the waiver expired earlier this year.

According to reports, the U.S. military’s operation targeted numerous Iranian military assets, including coastal surveillance and air defense systems, alongside infrastructure related to military logistics and maritime capabilities. The U.S. Central Command stated that these actions aim to diminish Iran’s military capabilities and to hold the nation accountable for its recent aggressions against commercial shipping in the region.

Beyond the Chabahar port, the strikes also hit various infrastructures in Iran’s Hormozgan province, including bridges and railways near Bandar Abbas as well as the airport in Iranshahr. Iranian state media reported that at least seven casualties were confirmed from the strikes on the bridges in Hormozgan, further intensifying the humanitarian concerns in the region.

The ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran have significant implications for regional stability and India’s interests, especially given its investment in Chabahar port as a critical link to Afghanistan and Central Asia.
