UN Reports Alarming Rise in Fatal Maritime Incidents Involving Rohingya Off Myanmar Coast

The United Nations has raised grave concerns regarding two recent maritime incidents off the coast of Myanmar, where it is feared that over 500 individuals have lost their lives in tragic shipwrecks. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) alerted the international community on Thursday about this harrowing situation, which underscores the continued plight of the Rohingya people.

According to preliminary reports, the ill-fated vessels, carrying predominantly Rohingya passengers, departed from Rakhine State in Myanmar in late June. These boats were reportedly forced to make their treacherous journeys during hazardous maritime conditions, typically not navigated at this time of year. The first boat, with an estimated 250 people onboard, lost contact shortly after setting sail, while the second vessel, believed to be carrying around 280 individuals, is thought to have capsized off the Ayeyarwady coast on July 8.

The UN agencies have expressed their deep concern over these incidents, highlighting that the perilous sea routes taken by the Rohingya are exacerbated by recent torrential rains and flooding in the region. Many of the Rohingya on these doomed boats reportedly originated from refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, where they have sought refuge after fleeing decades of violence in Myanmar.
