Violence Erupts in Manipur as Mob Attacks Assam Rifles Camp After Security Operation

According to the Ministry of Defence, the mob engaged in acts of vandalism, including throwing stones, damaging property, and setting vehicles ablaze, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The Assam Rifles had initiated a patrol and search operation in the Makuilongdi area based on credible intelligence. Reports indicated that armed cadres from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah faction), commonly referred to as NSCN(I-M), were seen outside their designated camps, which is a violation of a ceasefire agreement established with the Indian government in 1997. The group, which self-identifies as the National Socialist Council of Nagalim, has been under scrutiny for potentially breaching its ceasefire terms.

As the operation proceeded, the Assam Rifles claimed that its personnel were met with resistance from local residents, including women who came out to obstruct their path. The security forces stated they maintained utmost restraint during the confrontation, reiterating that their actions were in the interest of maintaining peace and security in the region. They also communicated with local representatives to clarify that the operation was necessary due to intelligence reports suggesting the movement of armed cadres outside their sanctioned camps.
