Pune Waste Processing Unit Collapse: Project Head Arrested Amid Safety Violations

The Maharashtra Police have taken significant action following the tragic collapse of a waste processing unit in Pune that resulted in the deaths of nine workers on July 8. Ashok Gupta, the project head of the company managing the facility, has been arrested along with Vijay Sapkal, the safety officer. Their arrests come after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which includes charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and causing a rash or negligent act that endangers human life.

The incident occurred at a three-storey administrative building of a waste-to-energy plant located in the Moshi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad. The building collapsed when a mound of garbage adjacent to it gave way, triggering a catastrophic event that endangered the lives of the workers inside. At the time of the collapse, 23 employees of Antony Lara Renewable Energy Limited, the firm contracted by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to operate the facility, were present.

According to reports, Vijay Sapkal, the safety officer, suffered injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical attention. Gupta, although he sustained minor injuries, was promptly taken into custody. The FIR was lodged by officials from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, who highlighted a concerning lack of safety measures at the site, especially in light of the heavy rains that were forecasted. The authorities are now investigating the circumstances that led to this avoidable tragedy.

This incident raises pressing questions about workplace safety standards in India, particularly in industries dealing with hazardous materials.
