India Protests Against Iran Following Fatal Attack on Indian Sailor in Strait of Hormuz

India has officially summoned an Iranian diplomat to express its strong discontent after a tragic incident in the Strait of Hormuz resulted in the death of an Indian sailor. This incident, which also left several others injured, occurred during an attack on two oil tankers navigating through Omani territorial waters, as confirmed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The two vessels involved in the alarming attack, identified as the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, had a total crew of 46 members, out of which 30 were Indian nationals. Reports indicate that the attack not only resulted in the demise of one sailor on board the Al Bahiyah but also left another Indian injured. Among the 18 Indian crew members on the Mombasa, nine suffered injuries, with two in serious condition. In total, eight individuals, including six Indians and two Ukrainians, were injured during the attacks, raising significant concerns over maritime safety in this crucial shipping lane.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has taken prompt action following the incident, maintaining communication with Emirati authorities to facilitate assistance for the affected Indian seafarers. The MEA’s emphasis on diplomatic engagement highlights the seriousness with which India views the safety of its citizens abroad, especially in conflict-prone areas.

In a further diplomatic move, Mohammad Javad Hosseini, Iran’s Deputy Chief of Mission in India, was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday. Officials conveyed India’s deep concern and strong protest regarding the incident. While the Emirati Ministry of Defence has not disclosed the exact timing of the attacks, the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region have heightened awareness about the risks faced by vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz.

This incident underscores the vulnerabilities that seafaring personnel face in international waters, especially in regions marked by conflict. India has a considerable number of its citizens employed in maritime industries worldwide, and any threat to their safety demands urgent attention and action from the government. The Indian government continues to advocate for the protection of its citizens, emphasizing the need for safer maritime practices and enhanced international cooperation to prevent such incidents from recurring.
