In a significant development in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces eliminated a commander of the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in a well-coordinated operation in Shopian district on Wednesday. The individual, identified as Zakir Ahmad Ganie, was reportedly involved in numerous terrorist activities within the region.
The operation was a collaborative effort among various security agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army’s Rashtriya Rifles, and the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF). Ganie, a resident of Motalhama village in the adjacent Kulgam district, had previously joined The Resistance Front, a group associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, in 2025, as per reports from local media outlets.
The operation commenced on Saturday after intelligence inputs indicated the presence of two suspected militants in an orchard located in the Meemandar area of Shopian. Using surveillance technology, security forces tracked the movements of these individuals, leading to a focused search operation. During this engagement, Ganie was killed, although authorities continue to search for the second suspect, identified as Latif Bhat, who is also believed to have joined the LeT in 2025.
This operation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in the region, as they work to dismantle terrorist networks and ensure the safety of local populations. The presence of groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba continues to pose a significant threat, and the recent developments underscore the commitment of security agencies to maintain peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
As the search for the remaining suspected militant continues, local residents and community leaders are urged to assist in providing valuable information that could aid in the efforts against terrorism. The concerted actions of security forces reflect a broader strategy to counteract insurgency and promote long-term peace in the region.
