Mumbai-Pune Expressway Blocked by Landslide Amid Heavy Rains

Traffic on the Mumbai-Pune expressway came to a standstill on Monday following a significant landslide, which obstructed the route in the crucial ‘Missing Link’ area. Reports from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation confirmed that the old Mumbai-Pune highway was also affected, with landslides occurring in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section due to relentless rainfall that has plagued the region since Friday.

As heavy rains continued to batter the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, normal life was disrupted, affecting commuters and residents alike. Visuals circulating on social media depicted a chaotic scene, where debris had covered the carriageway between the tunnel’s exit and the cable-stayed bridge in the expressway’s ‘Missing Link’ sector. This segment, which is approximately 13.3 kilometers long and was designed to bypass the Khandala Ghat, was inaugurated earlier this year on May 1, after an investment of ₹7,000 crore.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde took to social media to announce that efforts were actively underway to remove the blockage and restore traffic flow. However, he acknowledged that ongoing heavy rainfall and strong winds were complicating these operations. He emphasized the importance of caution, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel between Mumbai and Pune during these adverse weather conditions.

While no casualties have been reported as a result of the landslide, the situation remains precarious.
