Prashant Kishor to Contest in Bihar’s Bankipore Assembly Bye-Election as Jan Suraaj Seeks Political Comeback

In a significant political development, Prashant Kishor, the founder of the Jan Suraaj party, has declared his candidacy for the forthcoming bye-election in the Bankipore Assembly constituency in Bihar. This announcement comes after the seat became vacant when Nitin Nabin, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was elected to the Rajya Sabha in March.

The Election Commission of India is set to issue the notification for the bye-elections on Monday, with polling scheduled for July 30 and the results to be declared on August 3. Kishor’s participation in this electoral contest marks his return to the political arena after a challenging debut for his party in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, where Jan Suraaj fielded candidates in 238 out of 243 constituencies but failed to secure any seats.

Looking back at the November elections, Kishor expressed that his choice not to contest personally could be viewed as a tactical error, admitting that the party’s performance, which garnered less than 4% of the total votes, caught him by surprise. The results were particularly disheartening as the party lost its deposits in 236 constituencies, indicating a lack of significant voter support.

Kishor launched Jan Suraaj in October 2024, positioning it as a beacon of hope for voters seeking alternatives to the existing political framework in Bihar. His aim was to address the pervasive sense of political helplessness among the electorate, a sentiment that has resonated with many in the state.
