Bena Sareen Honored with Oxford Bookstore Book Cover Prize for Artistic Design

Bena Sareen has been awarded the prestigious 11th Oxford Bookstore Book Cover Prize for her exceptional design of the cover for Amitava Kumar’s novel, My Beloved Life, published by Aleph Book Company. This marks a significant achievement for Sareen, as it is her second accolade from this notable prize, having previously won for her cover design of Leila Seth’s Talking of Justice, also under Aleph Book Company. This recognition underscores her influence and talent within the Indian publishing landscape.

With an illustrious career spanning over 26 years, Sareen is regarded as one of the most experienced book designers in India. She was the first art director at Penguin India, where she established the design department in 1999. Later, in 2011, she played a pivotal role at Aleph Book Company, reinforcing her position as a luminary in the industry. Beyond her cover design work, she has held significant roles as the Publisher for the art books imprint, Penguin Studio, and as the Backlist Publisher at Penguin India, showcasing her versatility and commitment to literature.

In a recent interview with Scroll, Bena Sareen discussed the evolution of her design philosophy and its adaptability to the changing landscape of publishing. She pointed out the necessity for book covers to not only captivate readers in physical form but also to stand out as thumbnails in the digital realm.
